Effort-based decision making

When watching TV, you might find yourself wondering whether you would prefer to keep watching a boring show or rise from that comfortable sofa and reach for the remote. That is because you are at the same time trying to engage in rewarding activity while attempting to minimize the amount of effort to invest. Deciding efficiently which option to choose requires balancing the costs against the benefits. We are interested in the mechanisms that allow you to perform this type of comparison and make good decisions. In particular, we study how important dopamine is in controlling this type of decisions and how it affects the brain circuits involved in implementing them. We are also investigating how effort is represented in the brain, especially in motor cortical areas and basal ganglia.
